Titan Poker Seven Card Stud
Seven Card Stud Is A True Classic
While nowhere near as popular is it once was, Seven Card Stud continues to be played at both live games and online. For those who still enjoy this form of poker, it can be difficult to find much seven card stud offered at a lot of poker sites. However Titan Poker still offers a good opportunity for players to play this classic form of poker, which is nice.
Stud poker has been around for more than 200 years, where players would all receive a combination of down cards and up cards. The presence of the up cards provided added strategy to the game, as opposed to draw poker were all cards are hidden, and now some but not all the information about a players’ hand was provided, thus giving players the opportunity to judge the possible strength of a player’s hand based upon what was showing.
Much later, two more cards were added to the mix, where the total amount of cards went from five to seven. The two extra cards were dealt face down, so that with this newer version there are still four cards showing for every player, but they now have three down cards instead of one.
The added cards, where players would then make up the best five card hand they could out of the seven they were dealt, added even more excitement to the game. Soon, Seven Card Stud became the most popular form out there, and held on to this title until it was recently surpassed by community card games such as Texas Holdem and Omaha.
Seven Card Stud Versus Community Card Games
It used to be that everyone knew how to play Seven Card Stud, and then had to adapt their knowledge to the new community card forms of poker as they caught on, most notably Texas Holdem. Now, for a lot of players, the reverse is true, as they know how to play Texas Holdem and perhaps even Omaha and need to learn to play seven card stud.
If you know how to play Seven Card Stud, then it’s very easy to learn how to play Texas Holdem and Omaha, and the reverse is also true, as if you can play these more modern games you can easily learn now to play Seven Card Stud, as they are quite similar.
The easiest way to think of the difference is that both Seven Card Stud and Texas Holdem involve seven cards, but with Seven Card Stud each player gets their own seven cards to play, instead of just two and the other 5 being shared with the other players at the table.
There are a few other differences though. In Seven Card Stud, players all pay an ante prior to the cards being dealt, instead of two players having to post blinds with Texas Holdem. Also, the initial opening during the first betting round, the amount a player needs to pay, is smaller than an average sized bet. This is called the bring in.
How To Play Seven Card Stud
Players are all dealt two down cards plus one up card, and the betting commences. The player with the lowest up card starts the betting, and he or she must enter the bring in amount, or a full bet, but one or the other needs to be made. Other players can either call the amount bet, or raise. There is no checking during this round.
Should there be more than one lowest card dealt, then the suit will determine which is considered to be lowest. The lowest ranked suit is clubs, followed by diamonds, hearts, and spades, which is the highest ranked suit. An easy way to remember this is that they are arranged in alphabetical order from lowest to highest.
All betting proceeds in a clockwise fashion, as is customary with all poker variations. Three more up cards are dealt, one at a time, with a betting round after each card dealt. Then the final card is dealt, with a final betting round. In these rounds, instead of the lowest card starting the betting, the player with the highest ranked hand showing will do so, including starting the betting on the last round. If there is a tie for the highest hand, the player who is closest to the left of the dealer bets first.
Unlike Texas Holdem and Omaha though, position isn’t fixed by your relationship to the dealer, as who leads the betting is subject to change with every face up card dealt. So position is much less of a factor in this game and whoever is dealing has no significant effect on the game.
On the other hand, with the community card games, position is very important and an understanding of it can make a big difference in how well a player does. However the fact that this isn’t the case does serve to simplify Seven Card Stud and therefore newer players may find it more appealing for that reason.
